Beth Gibbons - Floating on a Moment

All other options for this week’s newsletter were put aside after this album was released.

It’s hard to talk about an artist who has acted as the Greek chorus to your life without getting overly dramatic. It has been 12 years since the last solo album and 30 years since her first appearance on the music scene. Because of this slow pace each piece is an occasion for celebration.

Unlike the material she is best know for, the new work is more acoustic / organic / folk, but still retains the emotional potency. Floating on a Moment is perhaps the track that echoes that past the most with a spaghetti western feel and the mournful vocals.

All attempts to describe, define or categorise feel hollow, trite and unnecessary. There will be a heaping pile of reviews and opinions about what her music means and signifies.

In the end, the most important takeaway is: we are lucky to have such a talent and it be someone willing to share it with us regardless of how long it takes.

An enthusiastic recommendation.
